I. Reported speech with Verb + Object + to-V (tell, ask, ...):
S + tell + s.o + to-V
Example: “Can you open the door for me please?” – She said to me.
She told me to open the door for her.
s.o + be told + to-V
Example: “Can you open the door for me please?” – She said to me. (tell)
I was told to open the door for her.
tell can be replaced with: ask, advise, beg, recommend, request, require, remind, order, want, …
Example:“If I were you, I would visit the doctor!” – Erina told me. (advise)
Erina advised me to visit the doctor.
I was advised to visit the doctor (by Erina.)
Please leave your passport at the reception.” – The security guard said to us. (require)
The security guard required us to leave our passport at the reception. We were required to leave our passport at the reception (by the security guard).
II. Reported speech with Verb + to-V (agree, offer, promise, ...):
S + Verb + to-V
We use these verbs to report the idea of the direct speech but not repeating the whole sentence: agree, disagree, offer, promise, threaten, wish, would like, want, volunteer, remember, forget, …
Example: All right, I’ll help you with your project next week.” – He said to her. (agree)
He agreed to help her with her project the following week.
"I forgot to post your letter!” – She told me. (remember)
She didn't remember to post my letter.
III. Reported speech with suggest/advise/recommend:
S + suggest/advise/recommend + V-ing
Example: “Let’s visit the zoo this weekend, shall we?” – He said. (suggest)
He suggested visiting the zoo that weekend.
S + suggest/advise/recommend + that + S2 + (should) V-bare
Example: “You should read the next two lessons at home.” – The teacher said to the students. (advise)
The teacher advised that the students (should) read the next two lessons at home.
It + be + suggested/advised/recommended + that + S2 + (should) V-bare
Example: “The salad should be thrown away tomorrow.” – He said. (recommend)
It was recommended that the salad (should) be thrown away the next day.
NOTE:
You are advised to exercise regularly. CORRECT
They are recommended to go on holiday. CORRECT
The man is suggested to talk to the police right away. WRONG
